Well, the right strategy depends on a lot of factors, including the 3-point accuracies of your team, the hoop defense/shot blocking capabilities of the opposing team, opening to the hoop etc.
If you can average 40% at 3's, then by all means shoot lots of 3's (but you should add some offensive rebounding help in there), because that means you can get 0.4x3=1.2 points per shot. If you are shooting 2's, you need to shoot 60% to get 1.2pts/shot! The vast majority of NBA players (probably > 95%) average below 60% at 2's! For example, we all know LBJ. He is an excellent attacker of the hoop (his strength/athleticism etc.) and many of his shots are dunks (higher percentage shots), but even him only averaged 60.3% at 2's this past season. He only averaged 54.7% at 2's over his entire career. We can't expect every player will shoot 2's as good as LBJ. What about Curry? He has never averaged above 60% at 2's all 9 yrs of his career (51.3% overall). ... |
